Lost Posts 2.0

I have not gotten the time from my last update to this current one. I've been either too held up by work and family or getting enough rest to last through the week. Even during the weekends, i might have to consider spending some time and preparing for the upcoming week's work. For now, i realize that i can survive on just 5hours of sleep each day, even during the weekends where i have to meet friends for breakfast. It all boils down to time management on my side which i am still learning to cope with.

People always say that 24 hours a day is never enough. I always believe that giving an additional hours would never solve the problem as you would still ask for more. People in the working industry are always hungry for time. We want things to be efficient, so we can work less yet produce more. We want things to be simple, so we do not need think long and hard. We want things to be fast, so we can have more time for ourselves and our family. In the end, if everyone wants all these, who will be there to do the otherwise?

I have learn that in this job, it's about handling multiple projects. My senior has been stressing himself out for taking on too many projects by himself. In the end, he is very capable but is burning out very soon as well. Even as i type this, he is being haunted by the ghosts of work. I seriously hope he is enjoying himself and not come back feeling the same.

Meanwhile, back to what I have done. I'm currently spearheading one project all alone. I'll be juggling another two which one of them has just landed on my plate. The one I am spearheading will be a tough one where i will have to learn the software and make sure it meets the client's requirements. As of now, it seems like i'm unable to do so... But i will see what i can do and provide a suitable workaround for the client.

As for the other two... All i can say is, i got only two hands and one small head. I can only focus on one project at one time. I'll possibly raise red flags very soon. :(

Tampines is just round the corner

The entire week went past pretty fast. I started with two days of training, where i have little or no knowledge of the software that i'm training on. I'm sitting in to listen and must be able to comprehend what is being taught from the trainer to the participants. From my perspective, i was there purely for making up numbers.

So quickly did the two days zoomed past. That had a backlash on the work that i have on one project. Due to the nature of the slack timing, i took a step back on my work energy. Relax a little, just like how i expect working life to be. But it didn't turn out to be just that when the week comes to an end...

The next day, i was back in office. It is still a small prison... Heck, i think the prison cell has wider space compared to this place. Haha... Anyway, i was back and the entire office was filled up. It was a blessing that i'll be stationed at the client after lunch to work on the user requirement. As of now, i'm handling two projects with another two more piling up on my support tray. How tiring can i get? Very... I'm getting too tired at times to think things properly, feeling lethargic even after a long night's rest.

But back to topic, i was at another client's place working on gathering user requirements. It was very near home so i was smiling ear to ear when all i had to do was take a 10 minute bus ride home. That was something that i never imagined i could do. Guess i might or might not have such luxuries in the future.

So friday came... It was a meeting with the client at their location and they had to be situated at Tampines. Such is the irony of IT developer as you are supposed to drop by the client's place occasionally, but this is taking a step too far. From Clementi to Tampines, just travelling takes a whole hour. Well... I'll just have to live with it. The meeting took the entire day. It was something that i wasn't very comfortable with. Sitting in a room and not able to move around, that's quite a torture.

Well, the most problematic now is the current project i'm handling. I'm gonna take over from my senior yet, i've not able to fully understand issues that are being sent back to me. I'm not very fantastic at programming, but i'm willing to learn. And programming isn't something you learn and get is an expert at it. I'll have to depend on the experience that my senior has and hopefully guide me along the right path.

National Day Weekend

It's another simple start to yet another week. But this week has one more day of holiday, and that is the nation's birthday! Independence day of Singapore. YAY!! Long Weekend!!

So the week started with more work on both SYSMEX and Roche. On SYSMEX, i'm handling the project rather on a touch and go kind of feeling. I have to learn as fast as i can and start solving issues or preparing for UAT. It's a little hectic since there is no dedicated team, just my senior and me. Plus i'm supposed to be taking care of the mantle he is holding on when he goes for his long holiday. Arghz... So right now i'm learning as much as i can and pushing myself. Putting two hours minimum daily into SYSMEX.

And on Roche side, things aren't all nice and rosy. The Indian counterpart are very confused and yet they still want to continue with the development of the system. They submitted their requirements and we have gone through with them. Some are easy, tweaks to some parts here, change of values there and we meet their requirement. But there are some, which will need a big overhaul of the system. With such a tall order and such a short period of time, it isn't going to be possible.

With so much on hand and more coming to my plate, i can only welcome them with wide open arms. Even if i have to lose sleep, less computer games time and possibly less interaction with my family. Boy i "LOVE" my job!

"Huh?!?! Why so many steps??"

This week was one of the most stress laden week i even had in Muu. By the end of the week, i'm getting headaches from lack of rest and stress from work. But a good weekend rest and good company solved everything. One of my most memorable week of the year.

The week started out good with me preparing the slides and presentation to the India counterpart. I've to come up with the users, the flow of processes and listing out the levels of permissions each users have. I've taken quite awhile to prepare the notes and all. On the actual day, it was my first ever international meeting. Still, i played it cool and acted that it was all normal.

The meeting went well until the India counterpart asking why is the system they viewed different from what we had. We were shocked. All of us were shocked... So we quickly gathered ourselves and come to a common ground. And that is where all the stress load starts to incline. I'm still impressed at how my senior can handle the work that he is currently loaded with. I guess when you are focused in your work, you'll get used to the stress load and ruckus from the clients. So i'm glad to have him as my mentor and whom i can learn from.

The rest of the week after the meeting was to figure out how the entire system works. The system designed by the chinese is not easy to understand. They put a lot of hidden steps and we have to jump through hoops just to achieve something which is something we will do in the shortest possible way. We are still baffled on how they can think of such a system and wonder how long and how many people were involved in the project. Guess we just have to grind our way through the mountain of codes and figure a way out then.

Huddled Up is the new In

This week, i was posted to the client's place. We are doing a conversion for a expense claims system. So my job here is to take the chinese webpages, send it to my "senior" for translation and conversion. After he has done that, i'll do a quick merging of the new pages and run tests to ensure that nothing logical has been changed. It can be said that it's quite an easy job. But... There is always a catch. While im here doing conversion and liaising with our "senior", i'm still being tied up with my previous project. :(

It's compulsory that we must be in formal wear when we are over at the client's place. And it's been 1 month from work since i have worn any formal clothes to work. Haha... so it did take awhile to get used to wearing formal wear again. But i've done it before during internship that it's easy getting used to it.

The room we have been given by the client isn't a huge room. A small room with a rectangular table for 3 person to squeeze. It's a tight squeeze most of the time, not much breathing space to be exact... But we still made do with what we have and not complain too much. We are still employed to do work, as long as it's conducive enough.

Right now it's a sunday and i'm back to join my colleagues to work on the previous project we are on. It's not an easy mode to be in. Having to work on a Sunday... Damn it... But datelines have to be met, work have to be done. I just have to tell myself i'm working for a better future for myself and possibly another. I think i'll never stay in this line for long, but it's still very hard to say right now...

First!

Well... After 4 weeks being at Muu, i realize that i should start something as a log to keep track of what i have done and what are my feelings after the end of each week. So this blog will come in handy when i want to look back at the achievements or what i should have done when i finally matures enough to leave Muu.

The first 4 weeks were very tiring. I have sleep less now. I have lesser energy. I have not jogged since. I feel like a fat slob working day and night for a company that I've known so little about. The pay isn't fantastic either, just enough to cover most of my expenses and possibly some weekend expenses. But i take whatever i can't be earning now to be payment for the stuff i'm learning. It's tiring but i know i'm learning a hell lot more compared to my friends who print papers, sort them and assist in the major support team.

As this week ends, the next week i'm going to be posted out of the company. And i thought i will be in comfortable clothings for at least till end of the year. No need for shirts, pants and leather shoes... Now i'll need to get a few shirts and possibly another pair of pants for work. Damn... But i think that will put me into a more working mood perhaps? We'll shall see how the winds of change will change me...
